We are a curatorial collaboration between Marjian Tsatsaros Tyagi (right) and Ariana Martin (left). We are captivated by the cultural impact and personal significance of food as expressed through contemporary art. Its importance to social bonds and identity, its affectation within economic and political powers, its environmental urgencies and its biological intimacies. Food is an integral aspect and influence on the development of human existence and our environmental history.
Initiated through the intimacy of connecting over meals, we explore how a method of cooking or the significance of ingredients shapes our sense of self, bonding us to others and affecting how we navigate through the world.
We are curious how food arrives at our table. How the existing structures and legacies of political, colonial and economic power have and continue to, control consumption and food culture across the globe. What do we produce, how, why and to what end?
At the same time, we are concerned how this has transformed our environments, ecologies and biologies. What footprint does food have on the world around us and within our bodies? How have humans curated our world for our own consumption and what can we expect in a time of environmental disasters?
Through curatorial research and artistic interventions, we intend to consider and imagine the past, present and futures of foods.
